WD HDD - clunk and crash

Well, about a month ago I got a new WD HDD (120GB 8mb cache) and since then, about 3-4 time at random points I hear a "clunk" from what I can only assume is the HDD.

The HDD "in use" light then comes on and stays on. the system tends to still run until I click the "start" menu or open explorer.

I'm running Win2K pro.

Is there a software fix to this or should I be sending the drive back? and if so, how do I do that because all the packaging got butchered for an $80 rebate

That could mean that the hard drive is bad. I know that the HDs that I have had make a clunk because they have a lot of bad sectors.

Who'd a thunk...the only hard drives I've ever owned to go bad before several years of excelent service to me were WDs...I don't buy them anymore.

don't blame you...

It sounds like you'll have to send it back...if not to the vendor then to WD

e-mail the vendor and call WD. I think you should be fine. I think after the hard drives are bought the vendors are suppose to contact WD to activate the warranty period. You have 3 years because you bought the special edition hard drive.

WD use to be my drives of choice. The first time I had a new one crash after a few days, the vendor (CompUSA) took it back and gave me a new one. This one lasted about 8 months. This one went right to WD. It was no hassle, they even paid the shipping with a 10 day turn around. This drive lasted almost a year, and they took it back too. The drive was only 1.5 GB in size (this was back in 96), so when it failed AGAIN after about 6 months, I said screw it, and bought a Maxtor. Been using them ever since, with only 1 DOA, which the vendor took back. We have 4 desktops in my home, all running Maxtors. BTW I did get another return from WD. That drive wound up as a slave drive in my son's computer and actually remained there until we upgraded to a larger Maxtor after 2 years. Maybe they work better as slaves. It might also have been a bad model, but it was enough to make me switch.

i've been with maxtor for a while now, no problems here. i'm on an 80 gig 8Mb cache drive now. actually, it was the CompUSA generic HDD, but when I opened the box, it was a Maxtor with all the Maxtor software and was labeled all Maxtor too. it was on sale for 80$. scooore!

Go to the WD site. They have a place there were you can enter your HD serial # and the site will confirm it's warranty status. I don't think a box is needed since they go by serial #. You just need to pack it properly when you send it back.

You'll probably need to download and run the WD diagnostics before you call/contact them so you can report the results.
