Speaker Problems

I have the Muse 5.1 DVD sound card and ALTEC LANSING ACS54 Surround Sound Speakers. The speakers, I've had almost 2 years, the card, about a year.

My previous sound card was Creative's 512 PCI card. Anyway, the surround sound worked fine on this card, and it worked even better when I upgraded to the Muse.

My computer was originally in the basement room, where I could let it blast out some. Last fall, I traded room s with my daughter so she would have more room for when her friends drop by. I took the smaller room upstairs, and started to use my headphones whenever I would watch a DVD.

After reading several posts on this board, it dawned on me that I hadn't checked to see if my surround speakers still worked. I just assumed they did, and attributed any difference to the smaller room and lower balance. I checked them out today, and the surrounds (the front speakers) don't work. The woofer works, and so do the back speakers. Checked all my connections and software settings. Tried several DVDs and games, but the surrounds don't work.

My question. Could they have just crapped out on me? Seems like some people have had that experience. Or should I just pull everything and re-connect. Rather than shell out money for new speakers, maybe all I need is some new cables. Any input would be appreciated.

BTW
Pentium III 800mhz
512 MG
65GB Hardrive
Sony DVD Drive
Sony Burner
Windows 98 SE
Linksys cabled and wireless access point routers with
Network card.

Thanks in advance,

Robert

you can probably test cables by plugging back speakers into front speaker cables...if you get sound its the front speakers if not then check front speakers on back cables......if you get sound there then cables or settings are bad if you dont then front speakers and something else are bad

Thanks cbuddha42. I did that, and then just unplugged everything, cleaned it up some and plugged everything back in snug and tight. I fired up my system, popped in a DVD, and my surroundsound was back! I'm a happy camper
