need a little help on this

this will be the first comp i've ever made

i dont want to waste money on stuff i dont need. this comp will be for music (mp3's etc) only. i have no clue what kind of stuff i should get though. all i know is that i need alot of space.

should i buy the cheapest stuff i can find then dish out some cash for the hard drive?

how much music (mp3s) are you planning to have?

how much is your budget limit?

and you said it is just for music?

what about speakers and monitor?

For music only you could probably stick with an older machine, maybe get a 650 or something from ebay but stick in a good size hard drive. Mind you that is for music only Games require a much bigger machine.

Although nowadays you can probably get a pretty cheap machine from Dell and be quite happy

ya i agree with them all . the only thing bad about older pc's is the limits on the size of the hd's . if you not going to go used just get a cheap board and cpu . and good sound card and BIG harddrives . where are ya in the world i am sure we can direct ya to a good vendor

what kind money we talking ?

Actually if its just for MP3,
1 )you won't even need anything above 500-600 mhz
2) HUGE HUGE hard drives (older ATA -66/100 drives are cheaper now, so you can get like a couple 120 GB 5400 RPM drives)
3) A decent sound card, like a turtle beach santa cruz (great card, none of the overhead associated with creative products).
4) Very silent case and cpu fans
5) 128-256 MB RAM

Thats a good audio server.

Just for mp3?
A cheap board with onboard stuff (video/lan) 64mb ram and the cheapest processor you can find for the board.
If its a new board, then the lowest cpu it will be able to take is 500mhz for AMD, just find like a Duron 600 or something and it won't have any trouble with hard disk support. Then just get some PCI sound card and you'll be set.

you dont need that big a hard disk for just mp3s....not many peps have over 30gb of mp3s so 40 would be fine

thanks people

for those of you wandering why i would build a comp just for music, my stereos going out and its mainly just an excuse to build one lol.

i might hold out a little longer though to save up some cash, then i might just build a complete media center
