did you use MAXBLAST to set up the hard drive or did you FDISK and format yourself?

I've never installed XP so maybe my question isn't relevant, since I don't know whether XP does fdisks and formats during install.

From the sounds of it your cd drive may be playing up... Sounds like the discs are being read correctly...

How do you have the harddisk/s & cd drives setup? (e.g. which deivices are master/slave, and on which IDE channel)

is it an ATA100/133 drive are you using the 80 wire cable if it is or an old 40 wire cable. If it is an ATA100/133 drive The 80 wire cable is needed for the HDD to work properly.

Could be a problem w/ the ram or the ram slot, XP is VERY picky about that. I had the same thing on a K7S5A. I spent a weekend trying everything, finally seitched the ram to the second slot and everything was peachy. If that doesn't fix it, can you borrow a known working stick from a friend?

Trouble is it sounds like a hardware error not a software/OS problem necessarily.
Can you hook up the 30 gig to a working machine, to run a scandisk or HD utility from maker's site?

instead of using your clear cable, try the one that came with the hdd... what can it hurt, maybe your cable isn't the right kind

the problem you are describing, is similar to something that happened to me when I used the wrong cable.
