Does it look the same on both ends? For all the speakers I've ever seen, its a standard 1/8 Inch male-to-male plug from the amplifier in the sub to the computer for each of the pairs of channels. You expressed that you tried a plug that fit to no avail though. When you tried one of the "card to speaker" cables, did you get no sound out of the rears, or just out of one? If its out of just one, you have a mono 1/8" plug when you need a stereo, since its two channels, left and right.
Another possibility is that you arent plugging into the rear output in the soundcard. You need a sound card that supports at least 4.1 sound for these speakers. You didn't mention what sound card your using, so I thought I'd bring this up.
The front should go into the green plug, and the rear should go into the black plug in the sound card. If it only has, say, green, blue and red plugs, then your sound card most likely does not support 4.1 sound. If it does support 4.1, make sure your sound cards drivers or software has 4 speaker mode enabled.
