Bad monitor?

Yesterday my monitor blacked out. At first I thought it went into the sleep mode and so I tried to "wake" it but that didn't work and the screen stayed black for a long time. I then turned off the computer and unplugged the monitor for a couple of hours and then plugged it back in and the green light came on but the screen was still black. So I unplugged everything again and left it like that overnight. This morning when I plugged it all back in the monitor came on, but the color was funny and after i had turned the computer off and went to work and then came back and turned it on again the color got a little bit better. Then I turned it off again and went to run some errands and when i came back and turned the computer and all on everything was back to normal. My first question would be is this a dying monitor or can it be fixed? If it can be fixed is it worth it or should I just get a new monitor?

I bought this computer including the monitor back in 1999 and so it would really surprised me if the monitor is going bad.

Oh by the way, this is a Gateway computer and monitor. The monitor is a 17" and it's a Gateway EV700.

Thanks so much!
Jenny

Hmmm Have you tried a different monitor ( if one is around) it also can be possible that its your Video Card. Try a different monitor and see if it works fine with that. Then try with the old one and see what happens. Its also possible you might have had a loose connection.

Try another monitor in the system...if it doesn't work..it's the video card.

If that doesn't work, make sure your video card is securely in the correct slot

Yeah I tried this old monitor that belonged to my brother's ex-gf and it is a very old Gateway monitor and I tried it at first just to make sure it wasn't anything to dow ith my harddrive which i figured it wouldn't but i wanted to be absolutely sure. But that monitor is really bad anyways. I mean the screen flickers and it's all screwy.

No, the other monitor is bad anyways. It doesn't even work when you hook it up to another hard drive.

May want to check the VGA cable for bent or snapped pins.

Ok, I will check the VGA cable. Thank you to all who helped. i really appreciate it and I have one other question for ya.

I really want to get a new monitor anyway because this one is so big and bulky and takes up so much room on my desk. Does anyone know where I can get a good deal on new/used monitors?

Thanks so much!
