odd wireless question maybe?

i just got this setup.

the linksys cable modem and the linksys wireless 4port router with the linksys PC card that goes into my new laptop.
now, when im on AIM (aol instant messenger), it will lag every now and then.

i.e. - if i try to view a profile, it says "please wait..." for a long ass time. if it doesnt work it will boot me off AIM. now it doesnt do this when i just directly connect my cable modem to my laptop without using any wireless units.

is there a certain spot i need to put my wireless router? ANY HELP IS APPRECIATED, this is pissing me off and im about to just go buy the regular setup with using the LAN cables versus the wireless piece. thanks!

do you have the router away from other electronics?

do you have the latest firmware?

do you have the antennas pointing straight up and down?

update the drivers for the wireless card?

Make sure you have the latest firmware for your Router and the latest drivers for the PC Card.

Drivers / Firmware can be found here

http://www.linksys.com/download/

Also.. on your laptop.. go into the Device Mangaer .. select the Wireless Network Card.. and make sure that the system never turns the power off to save energy to it.

Firmware is the software that is encoded in the device (Router) that tells it what to do etc.

You also might want to change the channel that the wireless router is using to transmit the signal.. the range is 1-11 and I think default is 6 ...

How far are you away from the router? the further you are away the less signal strength you have.
