Reinstalling and drive letters.

A question I should know ther answer to:
Do I have to create a new partition in order to get my boot drive to be C ? I went ahead and installed on a raw unpartioned drive and now my boot drive is E .
Thx for any help.

Gary

I can change letters on drives other than the boot drive, but it's the boot drive I need to change.

Hmm, won't let me either, best bet would to remove all partitions and your other drive if you have any, reinstall then add partitions and your other drive later..

actually, there is a way to change the drive letter for the boot partition w/o having to reinstall the OS. it requires editing some registry entries...there is no way to do it via the disk management gui (as you discovered...)

I would do exactly as you are doing now. I tried, very recently actually, to change the bootdrive letter from the registry..all it caused me was a lot of pain. XP would not let me boot and it was unfixable. Luckily it was on a newly built pc so I had no problems with reinstalling xp. Now it works beautifully again
