RAIDing n00b Questions

Good morning all,

When it comes to RAID, I am a complete n00bie. I would appreciate it if you could please consider my setup and give me some feedback.

I currently have a 60.0 gb Maxtor D740X ATA133 hard drive http://www.maxtor.com/en/solutions/p..._133/index.htm and I want to RAID it with a 60.0 gb Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 http://www.maxtor.com/en/products/at...us_9/index.htm via a Promise FastTrak TX2000 card http://www.promise.com/product/produ...=88&familyId=2

Is this kosher? Will this provide me with a good performance RAID 0 setup? Any other suggestions?

Thank you.

Should work out very well.

Short of having a SATA set of drives or SCSI, you should have a very good and fast setup with the hardware you have chosen.

That setup looks reasonable. You should get significant performance increase with your setup.

Thanks guys.

I don't have the resources to buy SCSI drives or a SCSI RAID card, nor do I want to go buy 2 new SATA hard drives, nor can I afford a RAID card with more than 2 channels.

Well I might consider SATA drives, if you think I will get a noticable improvement with 2 SATA RAID drives.

RAID 0 is striping only. Just be aware that if one drive fails, you will lose all your data. You may consider adding a third disk and implement RAID 5, which has fault tolerance.

Yes, I am aware of the "risks" of striping, but I've never experienced a drive failure in all my computing years, so personally I am not to afraid of this (I'll admit that this is the old ostrich "head in the sand" mindset, but I think I'll be ok).

I already have a secondary hard drive where I store all my zipped drivers, important information, etc...

Thanks for the warning though, I do appreciate it.

I see it daily. The more you use your HD's (Which....it WILL use it more with RAID), the more chance of failure to will see.

I would consider you rather lucky then!

I deal with it daily. Bad blocks, bad parity, etc...
