Java and jpeg's in Linux

Couple of Q's.
New to Linux. Running Mandrake 9.1
On some pages I get the little puxxle piece in the place of something that should exist there. I click on it and get a Default Plugin mesage that reads "this page contains information of a type (application/x-java-vm) that can only be viewed with the appropriate plugin."
Where do I find this plugin and how do I make it work?
Other pages ask me which program I want to use to open a jpeg file. I can't seem to find any of those page at the moment but I do recall that it asked me if I wanted to save to disk or open with xxx.
Any ideas with that would also be appreciated. Remember, I a noob.

What browser are you using?

As for the java plug in, if you are using mozilla or Netscape, the plugin is called j2re-1_4_1_01-fcs-linux-i586.rpm you should ba able to find it by doing a search. If you are using Netscape(my preferred browser) or Mozilla the jpeg files open in a new window or you can select open in new tab.

I have the latest Sun Java installed and had a similar problem when using Mozilla with just the java applet on this site www.lagunaclay.com (only when using Mozilla -Opera and Konqueror worked fine) -I upgraded to Mozilla 1.3.1 and linked to the NS610 plugin in the /usr/java/j2re1.4.1_01/plugin/i386/ns610 (where Sun Java is on my sys) directory and haven't had a problem since.

Thanks for the info. I got java running and everything works great. Still having trouble with the jpeg's though. Opening in a new window is not an option. The options that pop up are 'Open With" and then a blank field and a browse button or "Save to disk"

when you click "Open With" what options does it give you? If listed you could select Mozilla and then it should open them.

Well the problem is different than I thought. Most of the time, pics open fine. I can look through the gallery here just fine. There are certain instances where I click on a link and I get that message. I remember something about pjpeg and assumed it had to do with jpeg's. The next time I come across it, I will look for Mozilla and post more details. Thanks

I'm having that problem too with JPEG images also...it's doing it on my laptop, but not on my desktop computer :\

IE is the default browser...IE opens all JPEGs and JPGs just fine...who knows.

Once I linked a URL to a forum and put the //// backwards like http:\\www.somesite.com\dumbuserswebspace\image and IE actually displayed the image whereas Netscape, Mozilla, and Opera all balked at it....
