"standby" doesn't work

If i try to put the computer on standby, it stops responding. I don't get an official message, the screen just won't turn on again. The light on the monitor blinks as if the computer was in standby. I can hear the fan speed change as if it the computer was on standby. The both hard drives just start going crazy, they start spinning full speed. The hard drives don't stop though, I've left the computer on "standby" for 5 straight minutes and the hard drives process full speed the whole time.

Operating system is Windows 2000 Pro.

There was a Windows Update for that for Windows XP...there might be one for Windows 2000 also...do you have all the Windows updates and the latest service pack installed?

Does your mobo support it?

Well it worked when this computer had Windows 98 SE so I'm assuming the motherboard supports it
