FTP/Server on XP

Let me start off by saying I don't know if this is even possible, but if it is I would like to do it.

How do I set up my computer to be an FTP server? I would like to be able to give my friends access so that they can get videos and mp3s from me. I am behind a lynksys router. I want to be able to act like a file server for my friends who cant hold all of the data on their small hard drives. Is this possible? and if so, what's the best, easiest way to do it (some of my friends aren't too good with computers lol)

Also, is it possible to host a website on my computer so that I don't pay for hosting? I have a cable modem and I keep my computer running 24/7.

To host a website you would need a pc with either W2K server or Windows 2003 server.

As far as VPN on the XP machine. You can make it a VPN server. I don't have an XP machine here.... Aha go to this link:

http://www.wown.info/j_helmig/xpvpncon.htm

You will need to forward PPTP port 1723 on your router.

Bulletproof or Ser-U are your best choices.

meese, not necessarily.. there are other FTP servers available. WS_FTP server is one that is available or as GZ mentioned Bulletproof..

BTW, IIS is also available on Win2k Pro and XP Pro (NOT Home) it is just limited to the number of available connections at one time (think its something like no more than 10 connections at once)

The downfall of using VPN is its usually quite a bit more difficult to setup than a simple FTP and Explorer is pathetic IMO for transferring files over the net.

(mind you I mean windows explorer not MSIE, and was referring to standard file transfers)

i'm sorry thats wrong. you can run it on reg 2k and i think xp. you need to isntall IIS to run a webserver. it should b e on the windows cd.
and also most cable ISP's do not like servers running on home cable acounts. i know mine dosn't so i had to use diff ports to make it work. it was a bit of a hassle but it works.

for the ftp. all you need is a ftp server prog like bulletproof and then foward the port on your router. then have your friends connect to the ip and port you have to set up users or at least the anonymous acount on BP to make it work. oh and if they are behind a router it becomes hard to deal with. at least all my friends behind routers have issues using my ftp.

edit vass beat me.
