Counter-Strike 1.5 Problem

I've been playing CS since 1.3 with Win98se, and everything was great until 1.5 was released. Using 98, I can open and select a game, but right when the console screen is going to scroll up, it reboots my PC. Valve is as slow as they get with the release of 1.6, so I eventually installed Win2k SP3, and now I'm on XP Pro. 2000 destroyed my framerate, and XP is a little slow too. I'm wondering if anyone else has had this problem, and to get any suggestions. I'd like to switch back to 98, but CS comes first.

are you running the game with software rendering, open gl or direct3d?

do you have the updates for your video card?

have you tried re-installing the game then the full 1.5 patch?

I use OpenGL, as the D3D implementation in CS is buggy and doesn't work right for anyone. My graphics card is a GF2 MX 400 PCI, and the same thing happened with my onboard Rage Pro. Altering the rendering mode or any other settings didn't have any effect.

I always have the latest drivers installed, and reinstalling CS works for about one time if that, then it starts doing the reboot thing again.

One thing that worked for a few times was to delete the "custom.hpk" file in the Counter-strike\cstrike folder, but again that only worked temporarly.

My system is:
466 Celeron
160mb
4gb + 10gb no RAID
PCI GF2 MX400 (Rage Pro Disabled)
Audigy (sometimes)
Crystal SoundFusion (most of the time)

well, I know there are way more textures (maps, weapons, everything) in each CS release... maybe its just that

The CS by its simplicity of its textures and graphics wouldnt lag out that much.

Have you tried changing your 'Vertical Sync: Off by Default'

Its under the Open GL Settings. I dunno what it does but everyone is doin it . It kinda boost-up the frame-rate a little.

I'm sure I've played with the Vertical Sync, and if I remember correctly I was still playing CS 1.5 with my onboard Rage Pro, which doesn't let you adjust the Vertical Sync or anything like that. And I don't think it's the size of the textures or the complexity of the game that made my PC crash.

What's really interesting is that no one else I have talked to has had this problem, or knows what to do about it.

I am having the same problem.

I had WinXP home on my PC and CS was working fine. But I decided to upgrade to WinXP Pro and now when I start CS it reboots my PC. I am going to try and use the Win98 compatibility mode setting to see if it will work but I am pretty sure it will not. I think that setting is for looks because it has never worked for anything I have used it on. But anyway if anyone figures out anything please let us know.

Could you post your specs? Maybe you have a similar PC and it's something to do with the internals.
