Wireless Network, Commercial Environment

Hi everyone!!!

I work at a country club and we have a computerized point of sales system. We are currently running a Novell Server, in 6 months we'll switch to Win2000.

I want to set up a new POS station (outside) and my boss wants to go wireless.

It'll cost us $200 for a Cat5/RJ45 Drop for the new Station.

I don't know anything about wireless!!!

He thinks we can set up a wireless Router(???) Hub(???) at an existing Network Drop and broadcast to this workstation. The location is about 30 feet from the spot he wants to set up the wireless on.

Is this correct??? Or do we need to set it up on the server???

How many computers can use this connection?

What brand/type of equipment should we be looking at????

Please Help!!!!!

You should be able put a Wireless Access Point (WAP) at the existing network drop. Then get a wireless nic in the POS station.

Here is a link to the Linksys site: http://www.linksys.com/products/prod...id=35&prid=501

There are many others available also.

Will the wireless work through a wall of steel, brick and glass?

The site states indoor use.

At only 30 feet it should be fine.

If this is your first attempt at wireless, considering it's a business you should get professional assistance. Wireless is notoriously unsecure. You don't need someone breaking into your system. Either that or start reading up on wireless security. The new standard for wireless encryption is WPA. Make sure whatever you buy supports WPA. I'm pretty sure the newer Linksys stuff does.
