Microsoft pulls out the wallet once again...

http://news.com.com/2100-1046_3-1015096.html?tag=fd_top

Now they bought a small antivirus company out of Romania...
Great so they'll bundle that in as well

While you could say this is a good thing for antivirus purposes... I kinda think its just for the PR... it will probably be about as effective as their firewall... "it works" but low on the functionality scale....

however thats what most companies like Norton and Network Associates (McAfee) get their biggest pull from.. "we just need antivirus running in the background because we were told to... OH but this version of windows has antivirus so thats all we need!"

Hmmm an interesting concept...
What's the most difficult thing for MS to push? (other than people to upgrade )
Their stinkin' patches!

Thats why there are so many virus problems, because people don't patch their machines (If they'd stop integrating new crap with their bug fixes it would be nice)...
BUT... what do most people that antivirus KNOW they have to do?
UPDATE the antivirus regularly....
SO MS puts the AV updates on windowsupdate.com (of course!) a user goes there and windows update says you need all of this crap... a typical user 'yeah just give me all of it shut up' so MS gets users to update their machines for less problems and they get to throw in any "features" they want into the updates including DRM stuff...

Thoughts?

I think they have a bit more pressure on them this time red.. there firewall has a noted bug in it, their OS IS a bug, their web browser is the swiss cheese of security... they have to get the antivirus right.. if viruses start sliding under the covers of that thing that will push even more people away from them... and many corporations are already at the tipping point for many reasons (Licensing 6, viruses, overwhelming integration of junk into the OS etc)
