animation software

With the movies like toy story, finding nemo, bugs life, ect.
I was wondering what software the movie studios use for the 3d characters.
Anyone have an idea?
Just curious

Maya, seemingly the industry standard software for movie companies who do not customize their own software (ILM does that)

Also lot of the smaller studios use Maya for their 3D work, as well as compositing and other post packages like Inferno, Flint etc.

But the versions they use are not the same as the one you buy off the shelf, as they usually have custom scripts and other fancy custom modules.

In this past month's PC Upgrade mag, they do a article on making a 9ghz supercomputer out of three 3ghz machines. They mention digital animation studios as people who would use this type of setup. I guess the CG needs plenty of power.

A renderfarm is a definite requirement for studios. I personally like a Sun UltraSparc III network of systems running SunGrid for compute intensive applications like 3D rendering or modeling.

Similar results can be obtained with Linux and even Windows on x86 configurations. For example, I use two systems for workfarm encoding of H.264 video.
