maxtor 160g and format problems

I have an abit it7 board and here is my system

it7max2ver2
xp pro
western digital 40g system
2-80g western dig raid0

I attached this new (maxtor 160g) drive to my serilell sata adapter and the system recognized it fine in the boot process-I tried to format in disk management and it goes all the way through and then throws up "cant complete format" flag-read maxtor manual and it says to install maxblast cd-installs a registry entry allowing xp to see the >137g drive-completed that and then the maxblast program can't see drive-I think because the raid and sata drives are scsi-not really-but the way the drives are seen is scsi because the raid and sata are under the raid controller-any ideas-system works great except for the new drive which is shown in disk manangement as healthy-but no format (ie no ntsf file system)
Thanks for any suggestions

check the maxtor website. they should have a program that you can run so your computer can recognize hard drives bigger than 137 gigs.

Maybe you didn't install it correctly. There is a 137.4 GB barrier due to ATA 28-bit addressing. You need the 48-bit addressing. If installed correctly it will be able to detect it correctly. If you think you have installed it correctly, then your computer should say that the hard drive has a capacity of 149 gigs(amount free after you format your hard drive). Also you have this hard drive connected to a serial ATA to ATA adapter? The hard drive is a Maxtor Diamondmax 16 5400 rpm drive?

Ok I just installed this same exact drive today and came across a few problems along the way, but mine is working great now. Here's what you do:

1. Install the ATA/133 PCI card that came with it.

2. Boot up the system and install the drivers for that card by going into device manager -> RAID & SCSI Controllers (or something like that) Use the driver off the MaxBlast cd. Make sure you pick the driver for your OS.

3. Power off and hook up your harddrive to the card and PSU.

4. Boot up and make sure your BIOS recignizes the drive.

5. If this is going to be an extra storage drive take the jumper off, otherwise it limits you size to 33.8 gigs.

6. Boot to the MaxBlast 3 CD-ROM and follow on screen directions for formatting

better solution-

pulled the sata adapter off
pulled dvd and cd off ide 2
plugged 160g drive into ide2 and ran cd from maxtor
installed fine and formatted with disk manager from xp pro
reattached 160g drive to sata adapter and all is well-
apparently, problem is trying to run the cd from maxtor using the sata adapter-doesnot work correctly
no need on my mobo for pci card
