2 HD and NTFS questions

Our good freind here at Techimo....williams22....has brought up a very good question to me at least..... and I did search but found no specific thread concerning a PCI ATA 133 card that comes with Maxtor hard drives.
1. From what I have read ...the PCI bus is slower than the IDE bus in terms of transporting data throughput. Why would going through the PCI be faster than attaching as slave to a ATA 100 IDE drive?

2. Who here has actually converted a decent amount of gigs of data from FAT32 over to NTFS using XPs convert wizard?
I have read that some people have had heavy data corruption due to this process and had to format!

I can't answer question 1, but will comment on question 2.

M$ themselves ackknowldege that the conversion from FAT32 to NTFS is fraught with problems, so I would avoid any conversion. What I would suggest for someone who had an XP system in FAT32 and wanted to convert to NTFS is to use the file & settings transfer wizard (much as I hate wizards, this one seems to work ) to save all the settings and data, then reformat and reinstall XP in NTFS and import the old files & settings with the wizard.

Less likely to cause major corruptions and kill everything.

IMO, anyway.

Cheers
Mick

Ok I had one Idea...after installing slave FAT32 drive, couldnt he copy all backup files to slave....format master to NTFS and reinstall XP and major programs then coppy over files to the NTFS drive with less chance of corruption, or am I way off here?
(I got that funny feelin Im fallin off the wall on this one!)

Yep, he could do that no worries. What he will lose, though, is settings. So for example if he has set up his PC for connection tio a certain LAN, or set up modem settings, etc, he has to write them all down before he formats the old drive.

That's the beauty of the wizard - it lets you choose what settings to save, and what not to worry about.

A newly installed NTFS system will happily read local files from FAT32 - but it won't work in reverse (not easily, anyway).

I would do a backup with the wizard then do the conversion. Then if the conversion works, you are done, if not you have protection.

While in principle that is fine, I would not do that, S_J.

The reason? A conversion from FAT32 is not the same as a fresh format with NTFS. For file system reasons, I believe, a conversion cannot create a pure NTFS partition, so some of the advantages of using NTFS are lost if a FAT32 partition is converted.

To access it, you click on Start, then choose All Programs. From there, point to Accessories, then System Tools, and you will find the FST wizard program.
From here.

You must be signed in as an administrator.
Go to Start, choose Run, and type "compmgmt.msc" without the quotes. You can also find this utility in Administrative Tools in your Control Panel.
Choose Disk Management.
Right-click the drive or partition you want to format and choose Format.
You will be given formatting options. Select the ones you want.
