Is it common?

For these new compaq presarios with winxp, 128mb DDR and shared video memory to be so slow? I can't imagine Compaq would be able to sell many if they run like my 200mhz IBM on win98.

The reason I ask? both my mother in law and the nice old lady across the street have virtually the same computer. And they both run like crap.

Seems to me that they are designed to have senior moments, like the seniors that buy them. I mean, one of the systems is a 2.0ghz P4 for crying out loud!

Oh, and one more thing. How do you remove items from starting up in WinXP? I'm used to selective start up and the configsys command, or at least going through system information to selectively uncheck programs from starting and running in the background. How do you access this in XP?

1. Its compaq so as you've noticed there is a lot of junk that starts up automatically "For the benefit of the customer"
2. 128 isn't all that great for XP.. you could have a 10 GHz but 128 is still a little thin IMO
3. msconfig should still work in XP

Just today I got my HPPavilion ze5365..2.4ghz P4...XP Home...256mb DDR (64mb shared for ATi Mobile Radeon)...yeah...it's pretty slow...but I'm sure it's the lack of RAM, and that's why I'm going to order a 512mb module of 200pin PC2100 SO-DIMM RAM for it...should help a lot...along with dumping the crap bloatted operating system that came with it.
