Personal VPN/WAN Server?

Howdy,

I was wondering if it was possible to connect my home network with my buddy's home network via some kind of VPN/WAN setup?

Also, what kind of client/server hardware/software would I need?

Or if anyone could point me into the right direction of some good info, I would appreciate it.

Thanks.

Put one of these on each end.

Here's a how-to.

SSH provides VPN-like capabiities:

http://www.openssh.com/

Unfortunately, there does not appear to be a Windows version avaliable.

To point you in the right direction, take a look at these Gogle hits:

OpenSSH does indeed work on Windows.

OpenSSH for Windows

I have it working at home. Not sure it'll do what you want, though. It's good for command line and secure ftp, but I don't believe drive mapping is an option.

Good morning,

Thank you for the responses. I would prefer to avoid using the router solution since myself and my friend already have routers and don't want to go buy new ones, plus I think I prefer the D-Link routers over the Linksys ones because D-Link seems to have many more options available, albeit I have never used them.

I believe I have stumbled across some information about how to set up Windows XP to accept VPN connections, but I have not had a chance to really experiment with this and I kinda question the security of it (since Windows XP built-in firewall has a pretty bad rap).

THis solution works great with me.
Problem I have is there can only be ONE log in at a time. Anyone have ideas around that???

Im also using the D-Link 713P box as server and loggn in using windows xp and the IP address, username and password.

What solution would that be?

I wonder, does anyone else have any other VPN information? I still haven't really come across anything concrete.
