My cd drive doesnt work

okay, i have a compaq presario, and one day the cd drive just stoped working, i checked on the device manager and it says its running properly, I've opened the computer up to see if it was well connected and it was, so now, i dont know what's wrong with it. I'm running windows 98

Compaq Presario? Well there is your problem right there!

Check the IDE cables in the back, and then if they are connected properly, go BACK into BIOS and run an Auto IDE detect. If THAT doesn't work, try running the Detect Hardware wizard from the control panel and if it doesn't show up in the plug and play section, run a deep scan (which is usually meant for things that plug into the ISA slot and different jazz like that). I hope something in there helped!

BTW, was there something you did that made it stop working in the first place?

My cd drive went out a while ago. It shows that it's installed in windows, bios detected it and all that. It died so yours probably did too.

Yeah it prolly went to the great reading room in the sky

Had it been flaky,not working right,taking a long time to read a CD or anything?
On the upside you now have a good reason to add that new CD-RW

Hmm, if it's an older computer perhaps the lens is dirty.

If it did head south you now have an excuse to pick up on a new 52x24x52 burner for $10 or so AMIR.
