I have to disagree/agree with embj....
yes ...a standard Win XP Home install is bloated and slow if not trimmed down and tweaked.
Alot , not all, of the differences between Home and Pro are the "ease-of-use" settings and ways of doing things in Home edition because it is geared toward the "mom and pop noob" end user.
Any "random bad things happening to it" are usually caused by some of the bloatware includedn that needs to be trimmed or a 3rd party software issue not the OS itself. (usually)
The majority of bad threads about XP are older and include alot of posts from people who have not learned the OS thoroughly and customized it to their needs. I was an early XP basher myself when it first came out, and I vowed to never buy a copy.
Since then I have bought 3 for myself and suggest it as the OS of choice to anyone who asks.
Win2k is a very good and stable OS. I personally don't use it often if ever though.
One thing I can say for XP is that it is more stable than Win2k as long as it has been correctly installed on a stable system and you yourself have not created any software incompatibilities.
I have a feeling if you spend the money on another OS (more for XP Pro/less for Win2k) You will regret it later.
As always this is just my 2 cents, and it has been known to be worth much less!
