Win2k server died..whats up with it?

I am taking a 70-210 class...so I have setup a little home network with Win2k server on one comp and Win2k pro on another.

I had dhcp and dns running and got the Pro machine to get the DHCP to give it an adress etc. So far so good.

Then I activated active directory...so far so good.

Ok, now I am wanting to do some installs over the network to other machines....so I want to get RIS working....problem being that when I first installedw2k server I threw it on a 3g drive, lol.

So needless to say that RIS needs another partition to hold an image....so I used ghost 2k2 to ghost from the 3g to a 10g drive. The ghost seemed to work just fine...like all the other zillion times I have used it. (of course, I have never used it on NTFS,lol).

So then I was going to run partition magic 6.0 on the 10g drive to give it something like an 8g and a 2g partition....well I boot up with the PM6 bootdisk then it tells me it doesnt work on NT/W2k server.

OK, no big deal I will just use the 10g as my C: and the 3g as my D:...so I bolt em in the comp..and I go to boot into safe mode to format the 3g hard drive (which at this point still had the win2k server on it)....so anyway I hit f8 to get to the menu and choose safe mode...it gives me the login..I login and then it reboots....hmmm.

So I boot with W98 floppy and remove the non-dos partition from the 3g drive and then I try to boot normally thinking that all will be fine now.

Well it gives me an error saying that "Directory services cant be started blah blah"...and it references the lsass file or something like that. It tells me to boot into directory restore (repair?) mode.

So I try that and it seems to go ok, I login and I get the windows sound, the little chimes or whatever that you normally get when you enter windows....but although I get the sound the logon prompt appears again....I logon again and it does the same...more or less stuck in a loop.

So I try "last known good config"....I cant remem now exactly what it did but somehow it rebooted again or something like that.

And somewhere in there when I booted it told me the paging file was too small or there was no paging file blah blah. I have 384M ram and I probably set the paging file to 500mb fixed size...but it ran fine like that before I ghosted etc so I dont think that is an actual problem.

Before I ghosted the drive I didnt have any sort of errors at all.

Did the ghost mess it up or did I mess it up by booting with both those drives each having w2k server installed on them??

Is there anyway to fix this...really the only option left know is to boot off of the cd and use repair console but what can I really do from there? After all I have no clue whats wrong, lol.

(and peeps slam my WinME which has been running fine for a couple years now even after I have ghosted it and used PM6 on it several times)

Anyway, does anyone know the deal here?

Oh yeah....the computer is a P3-450, 384M PC133 (running at PC100), gigabyte 440bx board.

It had my sisters w98se on it on another hard drive. I just put the win2k on it probably Monday night, on the spare 3g drive I mentioned earlier.

She came over to get some files off her w98se install so I just moved the IDE cables over to her drive. She has a Dell laptop with XP Home so I just went into her w98se and gave it a static IP and gave the XP a static and set the gateway on each one to the IP of the other (probably unnecessary, but...)

Anyway at first it worked ok and I put them on the same workgroup etc. So when she got ready to transfer the files her w98se started totally locking up...it seemed ok in safe mode but in regular windows it would lock as soon as you clicked anything. I used msconfig to turn off the xtra junk she had, I disabled some unneeded stuff like ser ports etc, then I took out the nic Ihad just put in. No go. I used scanreg restore but it didnt help any.

I have NO CLUE what went on there BUT ITS THE SAME COMP THAT MY W2K PROBLEMS ARE ON.

Could it be hardware then....if it is why is it giving me all these weird OS type errors.

Should I try a new PSU...hers is only a 200watter but for a P3-450 that should be ok...its been ok for a few years now, lol.

200watt ATX case.
P3-450 slot one
Gigabyte GA-6BXC mobo
384m pc133@100
Some sort of ATI all in one vid capture card.
24x burner
LS-120 superdrive
Various hard drives depending on whether it is her w98 or my w2k server.
PCI 56k modem
PCI Sound card
3C-509 10M ISA NIC........this is the only thing I actually installed on her w98se cuz she didnt have or need a NIC before...and it was working fine in my w2k server for several days before I hooked her w98se drive back up...w98se found it and had the drivers for it.

Sorry for the long post, thanks, JP

Once you dcpromo a server to an Active Directory Domain Controller you cannot just copy it to another drive and have it work. and you can't use a win98/dos floppy to remove a NTFS partition. What you are trying to do is not exactly straight forward. One forum that may be able to help you is http://x220.minasi.com/forum/default.asp . I'm sure you can get the answer here but The minasi forum is dedicated to W2K Server among other things, they have a section dedicated to Active Directory. If you can't find the answer there you will not find it.
