what can be problem if ping suddenly is VERY high?

ive always played under 100 in ping (since at least 4 months)....but today suddenly the pings at 400? it could be a temporarily problem with my connection but im fearing that i have maybe made wrong options in settings etc? Troubleshooting anyone?

This is in all my games!

thank you!
Andy

you can try just restarting, what is your connection type? DSL? it could mean a leak somewhere between your two pcs. are pings low everywhere?

Wait until about 8-10 am, then try playing. If you can play with much lower pings than in the afternooon, it's simply traffic.

I agree with redwolf that its probably the traffic.

Yeah it's traffic or the server.
Do you run any programs like AIM, Kazaa or anything while playing? That could do it at as well.

You can try running tracert to the server you are playing at and see where the bottleneck it.

if you know the IP, or address of the server to go on.
like 129.111.22.22 or playhere.net

go to start->run
and type in cmd, when the window opens type this
tracert 129.111.22.22
or
tracert playhere.net

It will show you the path your packet takes to the server, as well as where the slowdown occurs.

Ping times are frequently out of the users control.

The few things you can do that might help:

1) Disable all other apps that use the Internet, especially peer-to-peer apps and programs doing downloads. Also for other computer's on your LAN)
2) Reboot.
3) Ensure you have the best driver for your NIC (trial and error).
4) Disable all software firewalls.
5) run some tracert dumps and work with your ISP to see if they can adjust their routing.
6) get a different ISP
