XP2700+ vs 1700+

Ok, the highest stock rated chip I have is an XP2400+. I also have a multitude of 2100s and 1700s, all Bs.

My question is this - Will I be able to OC a 2700 ( 2.17 GHz default ) further than I can OC a 1700 ( 1467 MHz default ). I have some of my 1700s @ 2300-2450.

Was wondering if just by virtue of starting at a higher default speed, perhaps a 2700 would go higher. Or, is it all the same core anyway and I'll end up in the same place.

The 2600s and 2700s are starting to get into the very desirable price range.

Please, knowledgeable, experienced replies only. I have enough of my own theories. Looking for peeps who have had personal hands on experience with the 2600s and 2700s AND the 1700s.

TIA
Scott

You will be able to push it further than the 1700 because its starting at a higher clock speed and higher FSB. Push it to 200mhz FSB and depending on your cooling you should be able to push it to 3ghz and further. Dont expect 3ghz with air cooling though.

"Dont expect 3ghz with air cooling though."

LOL, no I wouldn't expect that.
Was wondering if I could get up into 2550-2600 range with my best board, though. I posted this same question a while back at the AOA forums, and was told "no, don't expect more", so this is an interseting counterpoint.

Can reach 2450 with one or two of the 1700s already ( though I keep them at mid 2300s for heat sakes ). Would really like to hit 2.6 GHz.

Have an NF7-s rev 2.0 ( and some earlier ones ), as well as a rev 1.1 8RDA+ and an earlier 8RDA. Oh yeah, an A7N8X Dlx, too. The better boards here are hitting 220-225 FSB ( mem synched ).

Using SLK-800s and 900s w minimum 50CFM fans.

you could only expect 3ghz on air-cooling with an intel..

That's true...but it would be outperformed by an AMD running near 2.3ghz.

Many 1700's are overclocking higher than 21-3200's. It's an individual hit and miss chip thing.

To hit 3G w/ any of them you need some damn good cooling.

I keep hoping that the steppings will get better and better and maybe (just maybe) someday we'll see an air cooled 3G Barton. But, AMD will probably discontinue their whole line of 32bit chips before it happens.

Bartons don't get that hot...Tbred B's don't get very hot...all this crap about AMD's being hot isn't true anymore...my 2600+ stays around 36c in the summer now...it NEVER goes above 40c

They do if you pump a lot of juice to 'em.

But, that's not the point w/ extreme cooling. They just run better cold. I'd love to have a Prometeia.

So what is the real answer? Because i have the same question. If you were going to buy a chip for your epox board would the 2700 be faster than 1700 for overclocking, or are they about the same.
