How to get Outlook to check email?

How can I get outlook to check my email w/out having it actually running full blast? You used to be able to just tell it how often to check and then it would make a noise and you could open outlook if I'm not mistaken. I set it to check every 5 minutes, but it never does unless I open it all the way.
Please correct me if I'm wrong. And if you need me to clarify what I mean, lemme know, sometimes I confuse myself.

Outlook MUST be open in order to check mail. You could get www.mailwasher.net to check for you.

yup, you need it open. or if you use AIM, you can set up your mail accounts and have it check as ofter as you like. again..you need to be signed onto AIM though for this.
