Media player doesn't recognize disk in CD and DVD

I run both 98 second edition and XP on my computer mainly for compatibility of programs which XP won't retro.

In Windows 98 when I insert a music CD it opens the CD Player program and starts playing, as it should. In XP when a music CD is inserted it opens Media Player 9. with the correct drive number for either the CD/RW or DVD drive, then prompts me to insert a disk.

Ejecting and reinserting still doesn't give recognition. I make sure no other player is running and still nothing. All this holds true also in RealOne player and MusicMatch. I tried to go analog, nothing.

In My Computer or Windows Explorer I can open the drive content and it will list the tracks by number only and when selecting a track I get the message tha Media Player cannot find that file, to make sure path or URL is correct.

Data or program CD will run and auto-start without problems on either drive and I also can copy CDs from the DVD drive to the CD/RW or burn music from the hard drive, I just can't play music CDs.

Why would it work in 98 and not in XP?

I also have another problem with MediaPlayer which I will address in another thread.

Please help... ...Ott
