Lilo Bootloader help

I'm a Linux noob and I've set up a dual boot machine with Mandrake 9.1 and XP.

1. How do I set XP as the default OS?

2. How do I boot into XP's safe mode. I want to do a defrag. I've tried pressing F8 as usual, but either Lilo has disabled that option or I'm not quick enough.

1.)There will be a default= in your /etc/lilo.conf specify what you named XP in that field, ie default=windows. Save the file, exit, and run lilo

2.)You arent doing it quickly, i dont know if XP will accept boot parameters. Just keep ratting F8 as XP loads, you'll get it eventually. I know my brother fought this for some time.

I've tried pressing F8

right keystroke, youre just missing it. right after lilo is when you wanna hit F8. that will give you the start up menu
