Missing DVD player

I hope this is the right section of the forum?

I have a compaq preasario 700 notebook computer. When I turned it on today the DVD was missing in Win XP. It does not show up in my computer or in device manager. It is not even listed in device manager as an unknown device. I have tried doing a system restore. If I check the bios it is listed in the bios. If I put a boot floppy in it says do DVD drive found. Anybody any ideas why I have lost the DVD drive? The drive door will not open but but there is an orange flashing light next to the open tray button. The last thing I installed was Microsoft office XP last night.

Win XP
Compaq Presario 700UK

can't do that

I have reformatted the laptop so I have no registery settings to change? At the moment I have a blank hard drive that I am trying to install win XP on. The laptop is not recognising the DVD player. If I put a boot disk in it does not find the DVD drive and load the drivers? It is listed in the bios though.

Let me get this straight:
You are trying to load windows XP off of your DVD drive, correct? So you put in a floppy boot disk to load the drivers for the DVD, and it doesn't work, right?

Just trying to clarify . . .

yes

Yes. I put in the floppy and as the pc boots up I see on screen "error : unable to detect ATAPI IDE CD-ROM drive" and it will then not load the drivers for the drive as it can't see it.

I am using the correct boot disk for the laptop. There is an orange flickering light on the DVD drive door but the drive door will not open.

The drive is listed in the bios though.
