DSL Problem
well, recently my connection speed and ability to connect has sucked immensly. so i called up verizon, and i will say they are patient, good people. we went through everything and then it started to work. but then it didnt.i have a westell modem btw. i got new wires, check the connection, made sure all my filters worked, etc. I have lynksys router. i have the modem going into the router and then the router going into the different computers. i am running xp. anyway, the modem has 4 lights in the front USB, ethernet, ready, power. usb is never lit up. Ethernet flashes a lot, and when it flashes, the light on my router also flashes. i think this is weird, any thoughts?
also, the modem seems to reset every hour or so, it will flash ready, meaning it is readying it self to connect. it will usually be out for 20 minutes while doing this. I asked for a new modem which they agreed to send to me. I figured i would post something here if anyone had any information on what my problem, and if it really is the modem. Everything worked fine for the past 8 months, and it has just started now, so any help is appreciated. thx.

"they are patient, good people"
Sorry Shawdude, but if it was me, I'd tear them apart on the phone, patience and friendly lip service doesn't do it for me, when I want my stuff to work.
And make sure they credit me for the downtime too.
Yeah I am mean that way...especially when it comes to my internet connection =P

Have you hooked up the new modem yet?
Also have they run a check on the phone lines?
shawshank62 I would ignore goldenbuddha's advice. " Tearing them apart" on the phone solves nothing. | |

Yeah Surreal is right. I am a short tempered mad man when it comes to my internet.
But I get irritated when I pay for something and it doesn't work.

The router you have can use either Ethernet or USB. You are using Ethernet. Thats why the USB LED is off. Now the blinking stuff you are seeing is perfectly normal. Those LED's will blink when there is activity.
Usually if everything has been working fine for 8 months, I would suspect a problem with Verizon. Its is possible that your modem got the runs, but I doubt it. I would bet there is a problem on Verizon's end. Although they probably won't admit it. I used to have DSL through Verizon before I switched to cable. There was more than one time I had a problem that was on THEIR end, but they try to make you remove the router, tear down your network etc etc. I woulc call verizon DSL tech support and see if they are having any problems.

about budaahs comment. that guy led me to do everything in the book that he could possibly do, so i would say he was pretty helpful up to his extent. Anyway.....
I wont have the new modem until a few more days, but when i get it i will see if that is the problem. I did everything, direct connection, instead of through the router, i bought new phone line to go into the modem (6 gauge instead of 4, and its shorter length). He also told me to change my settings so that i have 10 half duplex instead of 100. it has been working fine for the last 2 hours, so im keeping my fingers crossed that it will continue to work.
Groundzero, i remeber you told me how to get the latest firmwire, but i forgot ......is it at the lynksis page?
As for the blinking, it probably blinked before but i never really noticed it, and is there an advantage to usb vs ethernet?
There is some work being done in jersey, but i doubt that would effect my lines in PA, even though i am only like 20 miles away. I was thinking that it was verizons fault, but if this new modem does not correct the problem, i will make sure they come out and fix the problem. This last week has been frustrating and i cannot bare to go through another week of slower than 56k speeds. Thx for the replies.
