win98 won't load all the way

win98,p2,266mhz,128ram, K6 amd, computer will not load properly only rarely does it actually get to a complete desktop where the computer will function. Most of the time it hangs on startup and will require many manual shutdowns before win 98 will actually load properly. When it did start normally, I found the that the drives a, c, and now (a B drive which I don't have] are using a MS-DOS compatibility mode file system. I checked the chkdsk funtion and it does not indicate any reduced amount of memory. also tried to disable many startup items after the problem has occurred many times. Any ideas that will help get this thing running again will be appreciated. If I can get this far, then I can tackle the other problems with the CD not being recognized.Thank you.

your 1st problem is that your computer is a p2 & a k6, naw j/k

did you make any changes to the system recently hardware or software?

could be a number of things wrong

maybe your registry is jacked up, try running scanreg

Go to safe mode /device mgr. and check each device to see if it shows more than one entry, if you find more than one remove them all, also the DOS thing is usually fixed by reinstalling your MOBO drivers.

Whenever I have seen MS DOS compatiblity of the harddrive it was always a result of a boot sector virus. The other idea I have is you might have a bad stick of RAM.

Shut down your auto start apps.

Find your motherboard manual and see if there is a core voltage adjustment. Sounds like it wants a little more juice.

I'm confused... are you reinstalling Win98 and having problems or has the OS been installed for awhile and you are now having problems getting it to boot?
