IP Address on Win XP Pro

I just converted over to cable modem from DSL. I am using a COM 21 Cable Modem and a Lynksis Router/Firewall. I need to find my IP address so that I can use Win XP Pro's Remote Desktop at work to access my puter at home. How can I find this? I have tried run>cmd>ipconfig/all and the IP Address that gives me will not allow access. I already have the port mapped out from when I was on DSL so nothing should have changed except my IP Address.

Are you trying to find the ip address assined to the WAN side of the router by your isp or the actual ip of your pc assigned to it by the DHCP server built into the router?

Since you did an ipconfig /all and that ip is not what you want then a guess you looking for the ip assigned by your isp.

Do this:

type http://192.168.1.1 in the address bar of your browser. A logon box will appear. Leave the user filed blank and type "admin" without the quotes in the password field. Then go to the status page of the router setup. This will have all the ip info.

Thanx,

Another question is how can these things detect my IP if my firewall is working correctly? I thought that the firewall hides my IP Address?

Firewall only hides internal IP, if NAT is turned on, or you are using a proxy server.

So the website detects the IP assigned to the router/firewall, and not the one on your system.

The router will only let requests from the web through that you initialize. It also blocks all ports on your pc unless you forward a port, like, port 80 if you have a web server or Port 21 if you have a FTP server.

did you set your router/firewall to have DHCP turned on? If yes, then more or less you are protected from a IP probes, since all the people outside see is your routers IP (from the ISP) and have no direct connection to your system.

But in order for you to be able to connect to your computer, you need to find out which port the remote desktop app you are using uses, and open it up in your router/firewall and have it forward to your PC.

Yeah...I have the remote desktop set up already...just tested it...works fine...

I was just questioning my security sit if I can go to a website and have my IP sniffed out.

What is the best way to maximize my security but still be able to use p2p progs and messenger?
