creating a site cost

a couple of questions...

my housing complex does not have a web site, but other places like it around us do. so i want to create one for it...

1. what should i charge them? complete design of the page, lets say updates for a year, domain name, email accounts, and a host.

2. What do you think everything will cost? like 75 for domain, 75 a year for hosting? and again, can someone recommend a host?

3. how would you present the idea to them? should i call them first and see if they are interested at all even? should i do a quick website first and then go over to them?

I have done some web design work before. Generally people want to see a sample before they commit to you, because you are not going to work numerous hours and end up having them say "No, thats not good enough." Usually you would charge a flat fee that would cover Domain, Hosting, and search engine submittion. I used to charge about 150 for this. Most domain names you can find for $20 or less if you look, unless you want something really popular. And I can't imagine your waking a huge site, so the starter package on most hosts will work, they run from 5 a month to 15 a month. It depends which you pick, IMO pick one with a friendly control panel. After that flat fee web designers usually work per hour. If you are just using HTML, or if you are using a WYSIWYG editor (Frontpage, Dreamweaver, etc.) Your hourly fee so be pretty low, like $20 an hour. If you are coding the page yourself and if you are using any other languages (PHP, Javascript, etc.) then your hourly fee goes up. Hope this helps

for those of us without the WYSIWYG acronym in our jargon vault, it means: what you see is what you get
