asus evility!
Ok, it is the same, sad, sad story:
Asus a7v8x-x mobo
athlon 2500xp
512mb Kingston 2700 ram
350w power supply
Speeze heatsink/cpufan
I re-installed a new battery
I am CERTAIN that the heatsink is touching the cpu
the power supply works well, as I have tried it on other boards
Nothing was connected, then everything, and every permutation in-between
I have NOT tried an agp card, but have tried a creative labs 8mb, and the ati all-in-wonder 64mb
I have reset the bios (technically speaking..I mean to say, I set the jumper, but I get absolutely nothing, not to my monitor not sound..but fans...oh yes, lots of fans..)
No boot, no cookie, no cigar.
I found out, the hard way, that there WAS something shorting it out, on the case, but, completely removed (you should see the setup..it looks like the bowels of the Millenium falcon), it still does not give me anything
The monitor works, the video cards work, the speakers work, the motherboard IS getting power, the jumpers are all happy, I just bought this setup, and I want to kick it!
Suggestions, please?

is the cpu fan connected to the cpu fan header ? maybe it won't boot because it isn't getting a reading from the cpu fan .

RMA me baby!
Yeah...I checked it all...I called asus and they said...
NOTHING!!!
So I am off to buy another (different but the same) motherboard. An Albitron with the same specs. So sad, so sad...
I called a few people in the know and they said that it was definitely a mobo problem.
Hey, just for gits and shiggles, and future reference...how do I know if it is the CPU that is defective? Would the fans still be running? Just wondering. We will see what is wrong as this tale of techno torture unfolds.... |

Hold on.
Try a different RAM stick. Just one stick (32 or 64 meg). But be certain that it is PC100, not PC133 (or have tested it at both settings on its own).
You see, many of the newer RAM are not PC100 backward compatible, but the mobo's still default to a memory bus of 100...
This caused me endless grief at christmas time...
Try it and let us know the results. Please?

Great. Just wrote all that one handed (cat) and then noticed that your system uses PC2700 (memory buss 333).
OK, so try some older slower memory. Seriously. The fact that the memory manufacturers and the mobo manufacturers use different defaults COULD apply here...
I hope that it is that simple.

so good
New motherboard!! I just RMA'd the asus today.
I am still having problems with system hangs etc., and I am only overclocked by ~ 200mhz
Any suggestions?
CErupple: yeah, cats...mine decides that nothing is more comfy than a good sprawl across my prone typing hands...and if I don't pay attention to her, she eats various cords and chases the cursor around...
Running:
FIC motherboard (rated for 266/333mhz fsb)
AMD Athlon xp+ 2500 333mhz-fsb
HUGE speeze cooling fan (about 2.5 times bigger than stock fan, has a copper core, and a heatsink almost the size of my power-supply!)
350watt power supply
(4) 80mm system fans (two are stock, the other 2 are glowing led)
Kingston ValueRam DDR 2700 (rated at 333mhz?)
9gb Samsung hard drive
15gb western digital Caviar hard drive
samsung 6x dvd drive
52x24x52 cd burner
standard 3.5 floppy
why no massive overclocking?
