intel 845 and 865 chipset
Hi guys,
I'm currently using a P4 2.4ghz 533 in a ASUS P4P3 mobo (845 chipset). The mobo gives me heaps of problems and i'm not happy with it. Thinking of changing to another ASUS mobo with 8X AGP, dual channel ddr, sata and 865 chipset. What do you think guys? Is it gonna make a big difference? I mean in performance. Currently using 2x 512mb pc2700 ddr ram. 875 chipset is beyond my budget! if i were to change the mobo, should i change to a new cpu with 800FSB?

If your motherboard is giving you "Heaps of problems and you're not happy with it", then I guess you may wish to pick up a new one. As for this "BIG" difference. NO. You may pick up some performance, but nothing that will make a noticable difference IMO. The 8x AGP is nothing worth bragging about, you really won't see that much improvement. Also, it depends on your hardware. I only see you have listed your CPU. But it's your decision. I'm running the MSI 845PE-Max V2.0 w/ 2.53GHz @ 2.8GHz. Runs very well. The last 3 boards have I've purchased have been based on the 845 chipset. For the $$$, can't beat em'.

I think 8x AGP, dual channel ddr and sata are essential for future upgrades... what do you think?

One of the problems is that my CPU runs at 45-47C at idle even though my fan runs at 6000rpm

Do you have proper cooling in your case? Temp. seems a little high? I was using the Tt Spark 7 and my temps were around 35c. I wasn't even running the fan at full speed either. My current setup:
P4 2.53GHz w/ Vantec Aeroflow
MSI 845 PE-Max
2x 512DDR PC2700
ATI Radeon 9700 Pro w/ Tt Heatpipe mod.
60GB WD HD
10/100 NIC
Sound Blaster Audigy
20x10x40 CDRW
16x DVD
Tt Xaser II 5000a series case
Case temp: 23c
CPU temp: 27c

Wow! Your temp is way lower than mine. Just now I adjusted the fan to ensure it to sit properly on the CPU and the temp now turned out to be 42C on 20% of load. The fan is now at 4000rpm, tuned it down a lil bit. Anyway, what is that Vantec Aeroflow thing? Case temp is currently 24C.
Anyway, I'll try to post a few snapshot of my case.
