Graphics Gurus (scanner related problem)

I have a friends old photo, part of which I need to scan in and "touch up".
I cant get the scanner to give a decent image, every scan has sort of motion lines ( like cartoons), and the image is not good at all.

Thats what happens !!

Any ideas, this is important to him.

What about the pic itself? Is it that dark or is that part of the scanner problem? How sharp is the original? Is this original a photo or a print? Are the wavy lines the only problem? How do other originals look when you scan them? Can you provide a sample from a sharp color original?

It almost looks like you have a vibration in your scan carriage.

Xeroid, the original is probably a contact print, but it is 67 yrs old, the whole thing is about 18" by 6", the bit I want is about 2" by 3".
It is not sharp, but a lot better than the scan, these lines are effectively making an overlapping image, that is why it is so bad, if I could remove them I think it would be fine.
Vibration (juddering) was my first guess too.

Update, several hours and "beverages" later.

Found the problem, the picture was so large and mounted on card, it was sitting above the glass. Not sure exactly why this casued the lines but its all ok now.
Thanks for the help people.
