Linksys router, cable modem hell
I have been trying to get this Linksys BEFSR41 (4-port) router to work with RoadRunner through a Toshiba cable modem with my Win 98 SE desktop. Then, if I ever get these two to work, I want to connect my Win xp notebook also. I have tried so many things that I can no longer think straight.
The Win 98 pc has IPX/SPX, Net BEIU, TCP/IP and File & Print sharing. Winipcfg without the router shows:
DNS server 24.92.226.12
Adapter address 00-00-C5-3F-3F-1B (the Linksys' MAC clone)
IP Address 24.161.112.1
Subnet 255.255.248.0
Def. gateway 24.161.112.1
DHCP 245.92.226.54
Last time, with the router:
DNS same as above
Adapter same as above
IP Address 192.168.1.1
Subnet 255.255.255.0
Def. gateway 192.168.1.1
DHCP 192.168.1.1
I have TCP/IP set up to automatically obtain the IP address; DNS and WINS are disabled.
I really, really, really need help with this PLEASE, SOMEONE!! Thanks.

When you surf into the router what is the ip address?
Also when you set it up did you power it on in this order modem, router, computer?
Are you able to ping by url or IP from the command prompt

The first troubleshooting step is power everything down, then back up in the order given by RP.
The second, access the router through 192.168.1.1 (I think that's it) and try release/renew from the router. If you can't access the router or the router can't pick up an IP, you'll have narrowed the problem considerably.

Same idea, more broken down into steps:
1) can you ping 192.168.1.1 ?
2) can you ping 24.161.112.1 ?
3) can you ping 66.39.95.116 ?
4) can you ping www.techimo.com ?

Are you saying your pc has the same IP as the router? Your pc should be 192.168.1.100. Thats the default first ip that is assigned by that router.

| Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe your Default Gateway and IP addresses should NOT be the same.. unless your modem is setup to display information in this manner this could be a problem with your ISP's configuration.
The gateway IP is normally the IP address of the router you're hitting at the ISP and your IP should be somewhat similar to the gateway IP address (ie. 24.161.112.128) but not exactly the same though some modem are setup to display the IP address and default gateway addresses as the same thing..

The guy is posting ip's with and without the router. You definatley cannot have the same IP as the router. Thats why I posted what I did.

Yeah I just noticed this as well.. Quote:

DHCP 192.168.1.1
| Same rules apply here^
Now I know this configuration is wrong, your computer should have a completely differently IP than what is set for the Default gateway as in this case your Default Gateway should be the IP address you surf to, to get into the modem, (192.168.1.1), you computer's IP should be anything BUT 192.168.1.1 (ie. your computer's IP should be something like 192.168.1.5).
BTW.. Are you statically setting you IP addresses or letting DHCP do it for you??

Thank you, hugely! For the moment, everything is jake, witnessed by the fact that I'm on the Win XP laptop and the desktop is fine.
I followed all instructions and for some reason, this time it worked. I really have tried everything and read many, many posts on several boards -- so somehow I just had the order wrong or whatever. All pings go! [Or you guys have the magic!] only point that is somewhat odd: Ritalin -- now, with everything set up, the Default Gateway shows as 192.168.1.1 and the IP Address, 192.168.1.100. Not very different but different enough, I guess? I'm confused about router IP/ pc IP.
Thanks again.

The router you have has a DHCP server built in. It can assign IP's to 254 pc's. The range is 192.168.1.1 - 192.168.1.254. This range is called a DHCP scope. Usually on networks with servers and printers with NICs built in, they have to have static ip's. Most network admins will reserve a lower IP range for static ip's. The admin can define as many as he likes. Now the router is the default gateway. Typically this will have the lowest IP. Then servers would get the next ip's. You might have 5 servers with static ip's from 192.168.1.2 - 192.168.1.6 and two printers with static ip's 192.168.1.20 and 192.168.1.21. Now Linksys knows this, so they make there default first DHCP IP address 192.168.1.100. You can change that in the router setup if you want. On your small LAN your two pc's will get assigned 192.168.1.100 and 192.168.1.101. Note that no two peripherals can have the same IP address. Things won't work right.
