Stock HSF w/Athlon 2600 CPU

I just got the above CPU (T-Bred rev. B w/333mhz FSB) for my latest beast. I am puzzled though by the stock HSF that came with the retail CPU. It looks a little bit better quality than what I got with my retail Athlon XP 1600 a year or so ago. However, the metal unit is made of three separate pieces. The base plate, fins and a shroud of metal over the fins to hold them in place and in contact with the base plate. The thing I don't like is that the fins are actually a separate piece. There is now more of them (the fins) than I've seen on previous retail CPU's, but they probably have poorer heat transfer because they only contact the base plate and are not a piece of it.
Will this type of HSF cause my CPU to run hotter than it should?

I have the same CPU...the stock HSF works okay. The CPU really keeps itself cool...it's not a bad idea at all to invest in a better HSF though...depending on your ambient and case air temperatures, the CPU could get to about 50°C...Mine stays at about 35°C - 40°C full load cooled by a Volcano 9

Thats what my stock HS/F is like on my XP 2500+ and it works great even OCed to 2.1ghz and keeps it under 40 deg C. Buy a valcano 7 and compair the temps you get from both.

unless you get a great deal when you buy your cpu and they throw in a high quality hs/f (which most likely will never happen) i'd suggest going with a high quality hs/f, preferrably made of solid copper. It should have some weight to it. I'm a big Swiftech fan, and use the MCX462+. It's a highly rated unit and reviewers seem to agree on the quality overall.

After looking at the heat sink for a while, I just think I'm going to lapp it and then polish it with jeweler's rouge. It should hold up O.K. Not to mention, I bought an ECS K7S7AG mobo to go with the new 2600 rev. 'B' CPU. ECS looks like they've picked up quite a bit in the quality department. My K7S5A dosen't have the look or feel of this new mobo. I'm also probably going to lapp the GPU heak sink as well (it has a fan on it) cause you can OC it via the BIOS. I'm a little excited and wonder how it's all gonna run, but I have to get these things done first.
Thanks to all who've replied. wallie_x

I'd be interested to see that myself.

I lapped the heat sink and found out that the base plate is actually coated copper. I thought it was stainless steel, but after sanding for a while I sanded off the coating (zinc?). It really didn't take a whole lot of sanding to get it flat. But the fact that its copper makes me somewhat relieved. I'll post pics of it when I fire up my other beast with the web cam.
