premissive boot?? help

hey everyone ! ! ! !
All of a sudden, when I boot/restart mymachine goes to the screen that asks how I want to boot
Running 98se
the little countdown thing going on and the choices 1 thru 5
1) normal boot
2)command prompt
3)safemode
4)step by step comfirmation

the above is not exact but you get the idea
I selective start mymachine, ran MSCONFIG still it goes to the choices ran diagnostics nothing wrong, did about all I could think of ad aware, spybot, norton, and some other web based utilites
all is well by them, and all is well when I get on the internet, or run any program
Nothing seems to be wrong, ecept it won't boot up without going to that screeen

Sometimes booting in safe mood and rebooting will reset it.

Or, look in msconfig ->advance for a boot menu option and uncheck it if its checked.

Thanx, but did that already twice

don't know what caused it, but I've gave up for a while and surfed the net, played with PS, burned a CD, ran live update for norton, scandisked, typed a letter in word, and all kinds of normal stuff, no problems about 3 hours now, I'll try a restart again and see.

check your start-up selection in msconfig if its on selective or diagnostic startup it will do that. you need to set it to normal startup

yes it's on slective startup, gona restart right now..................

............ ok 3 restarts
1st one same thing happened, went to startup screen with count down for what kind of start

2nd restart check MSCONFIG alls well, same result

3rd restart same thing

1st boot ( turned off machine and waited 3 minutes before booting.......you guessed it.......same thing

I haven't downloaded anything in the last week except the virus updates from norton
just started doing it today for no reason

shpc32 ( for printer )

norton anti-virus

thats strange....you haven't had any bsods or anything suggesting a problem as of late? no problems with instability? here's the microsoft help link for win96 startup problems but its not much help http://support.microsoft.com/default...NoWebContent=1

no I got no warnings, nothing, my machine runs well same as always, but that booting to the options screen may be a prelude to something.
btw I have a soho 3 machines 4 port router w/print server, DSL modem, and once again no problems anywhere
files transfer run apps from the other machines, everything is working

maybe run a mem test to see if it a memory problem causing it I really can't think of anything else hopefully someone can come up with some ideas i can't

other than viuses that might be causing it?
