Networking assistance request

Hi everybody. A question for you all. The answers to which might, I stress that part, keep me out of trouble. I would like to see what recommendations you would make to a networking newbie wanting to share files between my home desktop and work provided laptop. The desktop is running XP Home. The laptop is running W2k Pro. I have them currently sucessfully sharing a cable connection via a wired linksys router. A search identified the use of applications such as NetMeeting or configuration changes which would put them on the same domain.

I would like to know how to share files between these systems without, hopefully, having to modify any of the settings on the laptop. The configuration on the laptop is known to be picky. Any suggestion on how I might share files between the boxes without having to transfer the files via CD or e-mail. Thanks

okay with file sharing enabled

you will have to know the name of the machine and set up the shared folder

right click on the folder, click propertise then click sharing. click share this folder

for the share name make something easy like music or extra

then when you want to access the other computer

right click on my computer, and click map network drive

type in:

\\thecomputername\foldername

it was ask you for the account and password for that computer

enter the account name of whatever you are using on the machine that your trying to access

if you want to get into the whole c drive type

\\computername\driveletter$

ie

\\jason\C$

this will give you access to the entire drive

hope this helps some

You will need to make sure the workgroup name is the same on both pc's. If they are different, change the workgroup name on the pro machine to the same as the laptop.
