Need simple home network help
Heres what Ive got. A machine running w2k server connected to a machine running w2k Pro....just connected with a crossover cable.
I want to eventually have a little domain setup for 70-210 practice.
But right now I will be satisfied to get the server to dish out an IP to the w2k pro machine.
I have dhcp and dns installed on the server, I setup a zone.
As of yet I dont have wins running.
Each comp sees itself on the "workgroup" but they dont see each other.
Help me out a little here.
I have the w2k pro machine set to recieve an ip automatically...and for the dns server I have the IP of the server machine.
Am I missing about 20 easy things here? lol
Help me out...Im just learning.
I cant ping either of the machines from the other...of course the W2k pro doesnt have an IP showing.
Both machines show a local connection and I can ping the loopback addy from either machine.
and I guess you know that arp -a shows nothing on either machine.
Thanks, JP

Did you authorize the DHCP server? What do you see when you go into the DHCP admin? red X, up arrow, down arrow?

Im doing some 70-210 classes but I just started and Ive never worked with w2k at all, and the only other networking exp I have is stuff like internet sharing using a router that dishes out dhcp addies etc.
Class is one thing but sitting in front of the machine is another, lol....I see that theory is way different than practical nuts and bolts.
Do I need wins?? I am under the impression that I shouldnt.
And I dont NEED active directory either do I?
Do I need a default gateway on the client?? I dont think so.

Ok, when I right click the dhcp icon and click "manage authorized servers" (or whatever) I dont have any authorized servers listed.
The up arrow is white, not green.

Can you right click on it and authorize it?

when I try to authorize it asks for name or ip of server...do I just use the ip that I gave the comp itself?
When I try that or the name "server" (which is the workgroup name of the comp) it tells me "cannot access active directory" etc.

try using the IP of the DHCP server. Also, you may want to setup static IPs first and make sure they can see each other. AFAIK you dont need a domain for this to work.
