Depending on the specs of your computer you may not see the difference. It does the same thing to me however I can notice a difference altho its pretty vague to see the difference. Don't know what else to tell you other than
1. get used to it.
2. opt to play against others online rather than the computer.
by going with the second option you will get to play at player speed and not computer speed.
I have found that the old version of Hearts from Windows 95/98 runs at a frantic pace on newer faster computers. Newer versions seem to have lags built in to account for this.

I have it set on Normal [not Fast nor Slow]
I can really notice the lag as it waits after the cards are played each trick. The Fast & Slow setting don't seem to matter much.

yep, good 'ol MS Hearts, that is a good game. when your done playing BF, and CS, etc. its nice to go back to something like that. too bad i suck imensly at it though . Glad you found an answer to your problem.
