Linux DHCP Server question

I have a bit of an odd situation that I was hoping I could get some input on. The deal is, I have a house where there is an existing ethernet network on a single cable modem. I am currently redoing an attic room for use as my 2nd computing center.

Since I work for the cable company and am able to get modems on the cheap, I want to get a 2nd modem to take the bandwidth load off of the 1st modem. However, since I want to be hooked into the downstairs network so I can do mini-LAN parties, I need to somehow get both going into my computer.

I was thinking that there must be a way, using my Linux box as a go-between, to consulidate the two signals into one network.

Is there a techy term for this or does anyone have the faintest idea what I'm talking about? :-)

Bridging, I think is what you're after. I have no idea how you'd do it between computers though. You can do it with two modems in a single computer pretty easily.

I'm not sure how you'd set that up in Linux...I wonder if it automatically bridges both connections...

You could set up a linux box as a router with 3 NICs in it...1 for each cable modem and 1 for the internal network. Then just connect all of the computers to the internal network. Im not sure exactley how to do it but just search google for IPTABLES scripts with 2 modems and 1 internal NIC.

That's what I was thinking...something like Smoothwall

That should do it, I think.

Awesome! Thanks a ton! This is exactly what I wanted to do. I'll let you all know how it works out once I get it running.
