What OS was on the hard drive? If you're installing the same OS, then make sure you DON'T tell the installation program to format the drive.

OK are you tring to use a windows disk or a restore disk from a factory built system. If you are trying to use a recovery cd with windows on it it probly won't work as Compaq, HP, and several other branded computers recovery will only work on the motherboard with there bio's loaded. If you are tring to use a windows disk you could install over the top off the current install but not recomended. Your best bet would have been to go into control panel in safe mode before switching the hard drive over to the new system and removing all the mobo devices and let windows pick them up again upon reboot. If it you weree using XP I believe you are out of luck but I may be wrong as I don't like or use XP much.

i m confused.

which hard drive do you want to install winxp on??

the new(unused) one or the one with the data on it??

if you are gonna install xp on a new hd,its extremly simple.

just pop in the cd and follow the prompts.

opinions vary on how many partitions to use.

i divided mine into three . ten gig apeice.

i formatted the one that the os is installed on to ntfs.

and i formatted the other two to fat32.

if you want to install it on the drive with the data on it, then you d better inquire further, for i know nothing about doing that

hope i steered you in the right direction

Assuming you've got everything backed up from it now, it's quite simple. Just install the HDD in your new machine, and pop in the WinXP CD. Boot from that CD and start a new install of XP, and you're basically good to go. At some point it'll give you the option to format your HDD, and you'll want to do so.

It's possible it's just the boot order in the BIOS is looking on the HDD before the CDROM. Just change the boot order in the BIOS and it'll boot from the CDROM first (some BIOSes make you press a key to boot from CD - watch the screen for messages).

Cheers

My system is running an AMI Bios and I have to press a key to boot from the CD. Even if your boot sequence is right in BIOS, it will still try and boot from the HDD unless you hit a key when it tells you to. So, it is important that you watch the screen during boot up to make sure you press a key at the right time. Hope this helps.
