You need to do a couple other things before disabling the onboard video (if you want to even disable it at all).
- Install the new card (I'm assuming that it's a PCI video card, to replace the onboard.)
- With the monitor still plugged into the original video port, boot the computer and install the drivers for the new card.
- Reboot with the monitor still on the original video port.
- Right-click on an open part of the desktop and select "properties".
- Click on Settings tab and select the new video card from the display box.
- Check the box marked "Extend my Windows desktop onto this monitor".
- Now check the box marked "Use this device as the primary monitor"
This should set the new video card as the primary, and you can switch the monitor over to the new card to see if it's working.
If you're installing an AGP card, the motherboard should disable the onboard video automatically when a card is installed in the AGP slot. No other settings changes should be required.
