I've been looking on e-bay for some RAM. I am running windows 98SE. I have (unfortunately) an ECS K7S5A motherboard with an XP2100+ processor and am currently using 256mb of PC133 Crucial Ram which by the way I can only use at 100 cause if I turn it up to 133 the screen freezes. I want to get some DDR Ram (as Im hoping this might help) but am unsure of what make, speed, etc to buy I take it I would need PC2100 but can I use PC2700? Im confused I have been told that quality RAM for ths motherboard is important as this crappy board is fussy. I tell ya I have had nothing but trouble..........splashed out on this board with an AMD 2100+ which I can only run as a 1500+ approx 1.3 ghz................

Please please ............help

I'm amazed that you have had trouble with your Crucial. That's the brand I've used for a few years now and have never had a problem. I currently have Crucial PC2700 256mb with another 256mb arriving tomorrow.
You probably can use PC2700 but it will only run at PC2100 speed. If I were you I'd buy the PC2100 to be absolutely sure. And it's a few dollars cheaper.
Go with Crucial,Kingston or Corsair.

Sounds to me like your having some cooling issues. These boards are notorious for bad chipset cooling. Whata re your board temps? I'm runniong a k7s5a pro with a xp2000 and 256mb of pc133 ram just fine at 133/133 I had the same problems you described before I added more cooling. I'd sugest finding out why you can't run your cpu at full speed before getting new ram.

I too have the infamous K7S5A and up until recently was running roughly the same configuration.
What bios do you have?
I have had alot of luck with the "cheepoman" bios I flashed several months ago...solved many problems and enabled me to run 133/133 finally.
You are probably already aware of this but it has a wealth of info and easy upgrades for this board.

The chipset heatsink mod was easy and made a huge difference in stability!
flashing my bios was easier than I thought and made another huge difference!
This is actually a very good board once you "fix" it!
Dont go out and buy new ram until youve done some of these upgrades first, (unless you want to take advantage of these low mem prices anyway.)
You will be able to run your processor at correct speed and "overclock" to 133/133 to speed up everything as well and much more stably.

just buy a new mobo if u have the money and get away from the k7s5a. u would be surprised at how many problems that would solve.

well i think i know what your problem is darkheart. You need to change your FSB to 133. Since you can only run at 1500 and cant have pc 133 that is your problem. Try changing th fsb in bios or it could be a jumper

I run quite a few of these boards with no problems at all using all Crucial ram. What power supply are you using?

These boards are finicky about p/s and ram. You have quality ram, so if you are using a generic p/s, that might be your problem.
