My suggestions:
1. Check the power and cable connections for your monitor. I had a similar problem with the monitor in one of our office computers - turned out the monitor power cable was loose. Fixed the power cable and voila

monitor's working again
2. Check the power socket where you connected your monitor. Maybe your socket's busted. Try using a lamp or other appliance on that socket and check for power fluctuations or low or no power at all.
3. Check for power on your computer. PSU maybe busted or not enough power going to your system. Compare with PSU of a higher wattage if it works.
4. Check your videocard on another computer.
5. If videocard works, then it's either the motherboard or the CPU gone bad or your OS gone aray. Memory too although if memory's the problem you usually get black screens and beeps. Check mobo, memory and CPU on another computer if they still work. If they do, then it's the OS. Your recent upgrade may have probably corrupted the OS - that leaves no choice but to reformat your drive and reinstall your OS. Before that though...
6. Get another working computer, get your previous computer's harddrive, back-up your data either on CD or on the HD of your working computer.
Hope this helps
