Gamepad in Linux

How do I get joypads/joysticks working in Linux. I have 2 devices I want to use:
A 2 axis 4 button gamepad
an MS sidewinder precision pro.
I'm running Gentoo, with devfs and kernel 2.4.20-xfs-r3. and the gameport is on a SB Live! 1024, although I could re-enable the onboard one if it would help.

hey nukes,
load the module for input even if it is not USB, then load joydev, emu10k1_gp and sidewinder for the sidewinder and analog for the other one.

Odds are very good there are several spelling mistakes in this post.

but how do I actually use it? What device names are associated with it? I use devfs and would probably have a different file location. I would probably need to set up some symlinks.
After that, do games and programs just automatically use it? I haven't been able to find any joystick-related settings in any of my installed games.

hello,
i use jscal to test it, it is a console program. it is located in /dev/input/js0 .

i use it with tux racer, ninentdo emulators and decent - all native linux games. i dunno about winex stuff. for my games only tuxracer needed to be modified to use it, the other games had options in the menus.

bah, I don't use wine anyway. I just thought it would be better for trying out flightgear.
