Networking Help

I am trying set up the two computers in my home on a network. I have a Belkin 4-Port Cable/DSL Router. My computer is running WinXP Home and my boy's computer is running Win2K Pro. I have the Internet connection sharing set up and both computers will connect to the Internet without any trouble. I tried to run the Network Setup Wizzard in WinXP and use a Network setup disk to set up the Win2K Pro machine. However, I got an error message saying that you cannot use WinXP network setup disk on a Win2K machine.

Now, I went in and changed the workgroup name in the Win2K machine and my WinXP system can see the computer. However, I cannot access the computer; when I try I get a permission and failed path error message. So, I know I have not got it set up right. The Win2K machine cannot see the WinXP machine.

I would appreciate it if someone could point me in the right direction here. I installed Win2K on my boy's computer to try it out and see if I like it. My boy's were gracious to let me use their box for the experiment. But, they are getting anxious. And, I want to be able to share files and printers with them.

Thanks in advance for any help!

ChrisK

Win XP and win2k don't default to exactly the same kind of permissions in networking. So I suggest you have a look at Helmig's discussion on sharing disks under winXP.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

How do you mean?
I can easily use shares between w2k and xp.

Just setup a share, with appropriate permissions and map it from the other computer.

//edit: Just be sure simple file sharing is disabled

Muno, that's the trick: you can't disable simple file sharing in winXP Home without a hack using safe mode.

That's why I always suggest reading that page that Helmig put together, so ppl understand that.

It's a painful limitation of winXP Home.

Cheers
Mick

Oh, I didn't know home was so limited. My apologies.

I have read the articles and if I have understood it correctly, in WinXP Home, to disable simple file sharing, you have to boot into Safe Mode and give the group "everyone" permission to read, write, modify (including delete) my shared folders. This will in essence disable "simple file sharing."

Could someone who is familar with this article confirm that I am correct? I have booted into safe mode and looked at the security tab and see no actual option to disable simple file sharing. But, I think I understand what he is saying.

I appreciate and help!
