Hey..I've been looking to build a rock stable 'puter for months..i've got to come to a decision ...here's what i came up with..any opinion will be highly appreciated!..

Am i missing anything..?

And can someone explain to me whether or not an OEM version of anything will include the cables and/or wires necessary to hook up the system and if the Retail version would?

How do tell from an online store whether the A7n8xDeluxe they are selling is the 2nd version?

Finally, any ideas where i can get a Lian Li pc71 new for lowest price?

AMD Athlon XP 2500+ (Barton/RevB)
Asus A7N8X Deluxe*
2x 256mb(512mb) DDR Pc2700(Brand???)
IBM DESKSTAR 180GXP 8MB Version
ATI Radeon 9500 Pro 128MB
CreativeLabs Audigy 2 Platinum Ex
Logitech Z-680
Network Card ?????
DVD ROM ?????
CD RW/ROM ?????
Mouse/Keyboard ?????
Monitor (19" CRT) ?????
Floppy Drive ?????
Misc. ?????

Heres where I get most of my hardware, good retailer

Monarch Computer - Link to Case

Does the Asus come with build in LAN? I think it does

As for the CDROM / DVDROM, I found the Lite-Ons to be a great value, they are ridiculously cheap and work extremely well. Also available in black.

Floppy drive, the cheapest one available in black (since the case is black)

Mouse I like the MS Intellimouse Explorer 3.0 (thats my opinion)

Keyboard I like the MS Natural Keyboards (except for the Elite)

For Network Card I would go with 3com. They will cost a bit more, but are very reliable and cheaper cards will use more CPU if you use much bandwidth (over 40-50meg).

What size monitor?

As for DVD/CD, my experience has been as long as you stay with name brands you are ok. HP/TDK/Sony/Asus or other well known brand. The cheap ones never last. I have 2 HPs (CD-RW and DVD+RW) an LG DVD-ROM and an Asus CD-RW and all seem to be rock solid.

I don't run floppies anymore.

Keyboard and mouse are very personal, I prefer Dell keyboards and an MX-500 mouse, but I have large hands.

for network card and floppy drive, any generic one will do. the lower $$ the better. for the kb and mouse, try the logitech cordless mx duo. 85$ at newegg. but then again, like sj said, kb and mouse are very personal things, try them all out if possible before purchasing.

goldenbuddha, thanks for the link..i was looking at this site to purchase some of my parts, didnt really know how good they were till i saw their review on resellerratings..thanks!

Siliconjunkie, i'll go with a 3com nic..any specific models come to mind?

As far as monitors go, i'd prefer to go with a 21' but 19' is probably less expensive and more in my price range..i've been reading up on 19' monitors, however no ones been able to review a New monitor that came out..most of the reviewed monitors are years old..and i can understand that monitors usually last the longest our of any computer part but sheesh..you'd think that they'd make new models that are better than older models?

For the keyboard i want something that quiet..like when i tap on the keys they dont make a clickety sound, and if it does at least a quiet one..For the mouse im looking at something with a wheel, right now i have a logitech wheel mouse, imma head over to BestBuy/CompUsa/CircuitCity and see what they have..if you see someone walking around tapping on the keyboards..its me!
:P

I've heard about a slot loaded DVD rom?..is it still around? model#?

The slotted DVD ROM drive would be Pioneer . thats what I use =) They are great! I use the SCSI version 305, but the IDE would be DVD-105 or DVD-106

Any of the 3c905 models will work, $40-50 but in my opinion they are worth it. A cheaper one will work, but in the long run you get what you pay for. I will say if I was going to go cheap somewhere this would be it.

Dude, that's what i want..how much did you pay? and im guessing that all DVDRoms read at the same speed, and since its just a DVDrom im assuming it'll read CD's too and because of this the CDRW i'll use will allow me to burn CD's(from the DVDromDrive)to CDRW right with no big probs??

yes I use the pioneer as source to burn to my yamaha f1. It works great and is fast.

I do not remember exactly how much I paid, about 120-150 I think but that was the SCSI model. The IDE will be cheaper.

It reads DVDs at 10x and CDs at 40x. Plenty fast. Not sure if they have a black one tho.
